I was disappointed that your article about disappearing beaches did not include any information I didn’t learn in my AS program at Leeward Community College 40 years ago (“Failed policies allow Hawaii beaches to disappear,” Star-Advertiser, Dec. 10). No billionaire or hotel owner is going to give up beachfront property, nor can the state afford to move our roads.
The University of Hawaii could have been conducting studies with the latest geo-textiles that trap sand and mitigate erosion, new configuations of sea walls and groins that are environmentally friendly, or a genetically engineered sterile mangrove, a plant many Third World countries are using to protect their coastlines.
The study was a real waste of funding and a missed opportunity.
