News of the state Department of Education being sued over discrimination against female athletes at Campbell High School, as you so poignantly observed (“Treat girls fairly on athletic fields,” Star-Advertiser, Our View, Dec. 13), brings shame to this proud progressive state, at the very moment the champion of women’s education equity, Patsy Mink, is being honored by the magnificent memorial at the Hawaii State Library.
If I was one of the 22 women of the state Legislature, I’d be fighting mad at this outrageous noncompliance with Mink’s Title IX, a huge achievement in American history, 44 years after its passage. Title IX impacted not only every high school and college athletic program, but also academic programs for all young women.
While the lawsuit plays out (who knows how long?), the governor and Legislature should mandate that temporary locker and restroom facilities be provided for Campbell’s valiant girls.
