I am surprised you printed what I can only assume was a satirical letter (“Not everyone can afford fire sprinklers,” Star- Advertiser, Dec. 7).
In arguing against mandatory fire sprinklers despite the unanimous recommendation of the best authority, the Honolulu Fire Department, the author recommends ladders longer than 101 feet. Longer than that is not only unnecessary, but dangerous.
Even more unbelievable is the assertion that private school for his grandchildren, rather than the perfectly respectable public schools most kids attend, is a more important utilization of his money than protecting the lives of himself and all the other residents of his condo.
Requiring recommended fire sprinklers expeditiously should be a high priority of the Council.

A kinder, gentler time
In the spirit of this holiday season, and after what some consider a particularly divisive election year, we invite you, dear readers, to write in about kindness — something so special, touching or positive that it should be shared with our community.
Send a 150-word letter, or a commentary at 500-600 words, to letters@staradvertiser.com by Dec. 19 evening. A collection of these will run on Dec. 23, just before Christmas.
