As long as there are politics and money involved, there will be an endless problem of protecting Ala Moana Beach Park from developers and changing administrations. It is a cherry ripe for the picking.
The present proposal for a playground — which I consider contrary and unneeded — is opening the door to creating a carnival approach for several reasons. I can see that adding new features might lead to more separate contracts.
As designed, it would need its own separate maintenance facility and special crew. Because of the high risk of several features — ziplines and splash area, etc. — it would need its own separate insurance to protect the city and the users.
I believe that the whole park should continue to be as is, with no playground or other new features, but with improved maintenance. Leave it alone and keep it as one of the best “local people” parks in Hawaii.
