The recent article on “Heroes Next Door” about Veterans Affairs volunteer Glenn Uejio was both heartening and inspiring (“From The Slipper House to VA volunteer,” Star-Advertiser, Dec. 29). Uejio’s selfless work at the Spark Matsunaga VA Medical Center, comforting and encouraging ill and dying veterans and freeing professional health workers to concentrate on making patients better, is one way a single citizen can make a significant positive impact on our community.
Uejio’s compassion and generosity should be an inspiration to all seniors bored with post-retirement life and seeking a valuable activity to pursue.
Numerous charitable organizations like the Foodbank, Ronald McDonald House, Lanakila Pacific, meals-on-wheels, homeless shelters, environmental groups, etc., need your help to help our community and less-fortunate neighbors.
Invariably, the giving of time is rewarded in gratitude and love from those helped.
May Uejio’s remarkable story encourage hundreds of others to resolve to give of themselves in the new year and beyond.
