Student loan debt in Hawaii has doubled since 2008 but is increasing at a slower rate than the national average, according to a report from Experian Consumer Service.
Student loan debt across Hawaii rose to $4.1 billion, an increase of 107 percent from $2 billion in 2008.
Across the country, student loan debt rose by 129 percent since 2008, reaching $1.36 trillion as of the third quarter of 2018.
People with student loans in the U.S. owe about $22,600 on average. Just 5.7 percent of student loans were delinquent.
Student loan debt in this country is exceeded only by mortgage debt, which totaled 9.4 trillion, according to Experian, a consumer and business credit reporting service.

>> Kristie Chorny is the newest region director of Kaiser Permanante Hawaii’s employee and labor relations. She has 20 years of human resources and labor relations experience, including having served as a director of labor relations at Kaiser Permanente Northern California. Prior to joining Kaiser Permanente, Chorny’s career included labor relations and management positions at Verizon Communications, Kellogg and Foss Maritime.
>> Maria Regina “Gina” Rafer is Kaiser Permanente Hawaii’s newest senior director of provider contracting. She has 20 years of health care management experience, including having served as director of provider contracting and value-based lead at Excellus Blue Cross Blue Shield as well as a corporate director of national provider relations at Anthem Blue Cross Blue Shield.
