Shiro’s Saimin Haven has been trying to decide on the best containers for serving take-out. Now I read in a report from the city Auditor that trash in Honolulu goes to the same place, no matter what it’s made of (“Environmental groups dispute auditor’s study,” Star-Advertiser, Dec. 31, 2018).
All types of trash end up getting converted into electricity at the H-POWER plant. Banning plastic just changes what our litter is made of, but doesn’t reduce the total amount of litter.
Now I understand what the real solution is — use the containers that cost the least and work the best, and do our best to stop litter.
The city should focus on real solutions that help the environment and local business and, therefore, locals. One solution we’ve implemented is making sure lids are on all our dumpsters, so trash stays where it is supposed to be.
