City Council Bill 83, which would suggest that drivers flash hazard lights when someone is crossing at a crosswalk, is not feasible (“Honolulu drivers might be asked to use hazard lights at crosswalks,” Star-Advertiser, Jan. 25).
As a walker, I believe the only safe solution is to have traffic controls at all crosswalks. A crosswalk without a traffic control is false security for a walker.
If it is too costly to install the traffic controls, eliminate the crosswalk. It is safer for a walker either to walk to the nearest crosswalk or check both ways and cross when clear than to rely on drivers, who are accustomed to driving right through uncontrolled crosswalks. It is the equivalent of Russian roulette.
