While the intent behind City Councilman Ron Menor’s proposal is good, it does nothing to change the me-first attitude of reckless motorists (“Honolulu drivers might be asked to use hazard lights at crosswalks,” Star-Advertiser, Jan. 21).
Changing the driving culture requires enforcing the reasonable traffic laws that already exist. Drivers who believe they are above the law need to be brought down a couple of notches. Traffic cameras could play a big role in holding irresponsible drivers accountable for their dangerous choices on the road.
Compared to preventable pedestrian fatalities, arguments against traffic cameras come off as selfish excuses to avoid what might be initially difficult and unpopular (but ultimately effective).
