Lawmakers seem hell-bent on ruining tourist attractions and Hawaii’s quality of life.
There came the view-killing iron fence along Honolulu Harbor, and the money-losing ferry from the Waianae side to Downtown Honolulu.
The wonderful Superferry was eliminated. There is the over-budget, $9 billion rail folly, and the City Council’s near-rubber-stamp approval of hordes of high-rise apartments with disregard for height limits.
Greedy government implemented a fee to hike Diamond Head and swim in Hanauma Bay, installed indiscriminate traffic cams and closed the Stairway to Heaven. The city has doubled the price of on-street metered parking.
The latest challenge to Paradise includes a proposed ugly, view-killing, graffiti-attracting four-foot-high wall along the Ala Wai Canal (“Ala Wai Flood Control Project under fire,” Star-Advertiser, Feb. 5).
Lawmakers have proposed the legalization of recreational marijuana, along with a hypocritical bill to outlaw cigarettes for residents under age 100.
The government wrecking ball continues its ominous creep over the islands. Where and when will it stop?
