Pope Francis convened a meeting titled, “The Protection of Minors in the Church,” from Feb. 21-24, at the Vatican with church leaders from around the world.
I believe this meeting is an absolute must in light of all the scandalous abuses of minors revealed in recent decades.
One recent example is former Cardinal Theodore McCarrick, who was laicized recently (“Pope expels U.S. ex-cardinal found guilty of sexual abuse,” Star- Advertiser, Feb. 17).
Such despicable abuse of minors is committed by people of great prominence to the very humble. The Roman Catholic Church has had its share; but many other church denominations, groups and individuals have had their share.
Even in Hawaii, there have been a number of credible cases. I believe only a percentage of abused speak out for one reason or another.
Whether pedophilia is a disease or crime, it must be mitigated. I believe Pope Francis is addressing an evil head-on by holding the summit of church leaders.
I sincerely hope that there will be meaningful results, healing and forgiveness for both the Catholic Church and others.
