The University of Hawaii swimming and diving team claimed the men’s and women’s team titles on Saturday, as the women won their third straight championship, while the men won their first MPSF event.
In La Mirada, Calif., Phoebe Hines set a meet record with a time of 15:45.68 in the 1,650 freestyle, more than a minute ahead of the next closest finisher. On the men’s side, Metin Aydin claimed the top spot in the 200 backstroke, clocking a time of 1:44.15. Bryndis Hansen, Kasey Schmidt, Mia Tedesco, Anna Kotonen also claimed a No. 1 finish, winning the 400 free relay with a time of 3:19.74.
In Mission Viejo, Calif., the UH men’s and women’s teams completed sweeps in all three diving events. Johan Sandell took first in the platform dive with a score of 449.80, more than 100 points better than teammate Octavio Lucero. For the women, Victoria Moretti won the platform dive with a score of 265.85.
Rainbow Wahine split in softball
The University of Hawaii softball team split its two bracket games in the Hawaii Invitational at Rainbow Wahine Softball Stadium on Saturday, falling 3-2 to New Mexico before rebounding to defeat Canisius 9-6.
In the first game, New Mexico’s Maggie Buckholz smacked a three-run home run in the second inning off Brittany Hitchcock to give the Lobos all the offense they would need. Hawaii got a two-run shot from Nicole Lopez in the third, but could get no closer.
In the second game, Hawaii jumped ahead to a 3-1 lead in the first inning, then fended off comeback attempts by Canisius, as the Golden Griffons twice pulled within a single run before Hawaii stretched out the lead again.
Jenna Kumabe drove in three runs for Hawaii in the second game, while Lopez and Brittnee Rossi each scored a pair of runs.
UH men’s golf finishes last
The University of Hawaii men’s golf team finished with a team score of 911, placing 20th in the John A. Burns Intercollegiate at Wailua Golf Course on Kauai on Saturday.
Hawaii shot a 311 in the final round to finish the tournament 47 over. Arizona State won the tournament with a 24-under 840, three shots ahead of Texas A&M.
Castro sets single-season record in win
Destiny Castro scored 30 points, and the Chaminade women’s basketball team outscored Concordia-Irvine 18-9 in the final three minutes, earning a 68-63 win in Irvine, Calif., on Saturday.
Chaminade improved to 6-18 overall and 5-15 in conference play. This also marked the program’s first conference win in Southern California. The Silverswords had been 0-17 previously.
Jasmine Rachal led Concordia-Irvine (10-16, 9-12 PacWest) with 27 points.

HPU tops Biola in baseball
Evan Spitzer struck out seven and allowed just one run over six strong innings, as Hawaii Pacific topped Biola 6-1 on Saturday at Hans L’Orange Park.
Christian Kapeliela went 4-for-5 with a run and two RBIs for the Sharks (12-3). Ryan Gallegos scored the lone run for the Eagles (3-3) in the first inning.
