We mostly hear about problems, not what works, in our community. But the city’s 24-hour park security pilot project is worthy of praise.
Rolled out last November, the McCully-Moiliili neighborhood includes four of the nine pilot parks. Previously plagued by constant violations of park rules and even city and state laws, residents began abandoning these parks. There were constant complaints.
The parks were first closed and returned to decent condition, then contractors began locking the facilities at night and providing 24-hour security to stay on top of enforcement. These same parks now have new life as residents return to enjoy them (despite conditions on some adjacent sidewalks).
People now express gratitude. I am hopeful the City Council will consider this pilot project’s success in the upcoming budget so it can become permanent and expanded to other public parks.
Tim Streitz
McCully-Moiliili Neighborhood Board chairman
