As a strong supporter of Senate Bill 557, which would make Hawaii a sanctuary state, I share C. Kaui Jochanan Amsterdam’s concern for our many homeless neighbors (“‘Sanctuary state’ not for kanaka maoli,” Star-Advertiser, Letters, March 1).
Amsterdam’s worry that SB 557 will divert state and local efforts on homelessness is unfounded. SB 557 asks for no state or local funds and would save local tax dollars that might be better spent on homeless issues.
