The building code to re-build the many small aging apartment buildings has long been too restrictive. A push to re-design the requirements of building these small walk-up rental units is a welcome discussion (“Plan offers incentives for affordable rental walk-up apartments on Oahu,” Star-Advertiser, Feb. 7). However, the new proposals have swung the pendulum to the undesirable side.
The new proposals would allow for a six-story walk-up with no elevators, no green space and no off-street parking. There has been no indication of the allowed number of units or their size. These buildings could be built five feet from their neighbors, without any additional setbacks for height. Imagine all of the foot traffic, noise and impossibility of finding street parking for your family.
One thing worse than living next to a monster house is living next to a monster apartment.
