Senior Breanna Mackenzie scored a game-high 27 points to lead the defending PacWest champion Hawaii Pacific women’s basketball team to a domination of Dominican 84-66 on Friday and back into the title game.
Sophomore Alysha Marucci added 17 for HPU (22-8, 18-4 PacWest), which will face Azusa Pacific for the title today at 2:30 p.m. in San Rafael, Calif.
Chaminade men fall to Concordia
Redshirt junior Tyler Cartaino had career highs of 30 points and 10 rebounds, but it wasn’t enough as the Chaminade men’s basketball team lost in the semifinals of the PacWest tournament, 75-69, to second-seeded Concordia.
The Eagles (23-9, 18-4 PacWest) will face Point Loma for the PacWest championship today in San Rafael, Calif.
The ‘Swords (23-7, 16-6) must now wait for Sunday’s NCAA Selection Show to see if they will be one of the eight teams in the West Region to receive a bid in the NCAA Division II Tournament.
Wahine softball takes down Niagara
Brittany Hitchcock struck out 15 and allowed just two hits to carry the University of Hawaii softball team to 3-0 victory over Niagara at the Rainbow Wahine Softball Stadium on Friday.
Hitchcock improved to 6-3 in helping the Wahine improve to 14-5. They will play Niagara again at 4 p.m. and Southern Illinois University at Edwardsville at 6 p.m. today.
UH Hilo softball, baseball win at home
The host Hawaii Hilo softball team split its doubleheader against Holy Names on Friday.
In the opener, the Vulcans escaped with a 2-1 win behind sophomore Rayla Jacobs-Kea’s two-run single in the bottom of the fifth.
In the second game, the Vulcans (10-4, 5-1 PacWest) lost 10-6.
The two teams face again today at UH Hilo softball field, with games scheduled for noon and 3 p.m.

The Vulcans (6-9, 4-4 PacWest) had a huge seventh inning, with four runs coming home to go up 9-1. Christian Sadler pitched seven, allowing only five hits and one run.
They will play Fresno Pacific again today in a doubleheader starting at 3 p.m.
Sharks softball loses to Azusa Pacific
Azusa Pacific defeated the visiting Hawaii Pacific softball team 5-1 on Friday.
The Sharks (15-10, 9-2 PacWest) scored their run in the top of the sixth on a RBI single by University High alum Brazzlyn Tovio-Asato.
The teams play again today in a doubleheader, starting at noon.
HPU golfer honored by PacWest
Hawaii Pacific sophomore Sirasit Prateepmongkol was named the PacWest men’s golfer of the week, the conference announced Thursday.
Prateepmongkol, who is from Bangkok, placed 16th with a 2-over-par 218 at the Las Vegas Desert Classic, which ended Tuesday.
