The issue surrounding comments made by U.S. Rep. Ilhan Omar, D-Minn., that have been labeled by some as anti-Semitic needs deeper discernment. I’ve also experienced backlash for raising questions about America’s military aid to Israel.
Initially, we must distinguish between criticism of a government entity and prejudice against a culture, religion or ethnic group. From my perspective, there is nothing anti-Semitic in expressing disagreement with the Israeli government.
While it’s understandable (maybe) how this could be viewed as having a potentially negative impact on Jewish culture and faith, the criticism itself isn’t anti-Semitic, nor is it intended to be.
To solve this delicate, complex controversy regarding Israeli/Palestinian relations will require wisdom, compassion, compromise and a lot of time. A place to start might be getting acquainted and sharing family stories while eating a meal together.
Almost anything can be discussed within a strong relationship of trust and acceptance.
