The March 6 Star-Advertiser Legals/Public Notices page included a Department of Transportation Services (DTS) notice to motorists that indicated removal of a crosswalk across Waimano Home Road at Wahinani Street.
The notice did not give a reason for removal, or if an alternate crosswalk will be made available. The illustration provided with the notice depicted bus stops on both sides of Waimano Home Road near the crosswalk. The existence of nearby bus stops makes it reasonable to assume that pedestrians will need to use that marked crosswalk to get to and from the bus stops.
With all the recent publicity about the need for more enhancements aimed at pedestrian safety, why remove the crosswalk or any other crosswalk, without a suitable replacement? Leaving the crosswalk intact won’t impede vehicle traffic, but its removal will make it a lot less safe for pedestrians to continue to cross Waimano Home Road at that intersection.
The proposed crosswalk removal date is on or after April 1. More information and DTS contact numbers are available at statelegals.staradvertiser.com/2019/03/06/0001179202-02/.
