The 39-year-old man suspected of shooting a 34-year-old man in a parking lot next to a Jack in the Box restaurant had accused the victim of having sex with his girlfriend, according to court documents.
An Oahu grand jury Thursday returned an indictment charging Chauncey Hata with second-degree attempted murder and three firearm-
related charges. A date for his arraignment at Circuit Court has yet to be scheduled.
Hata made his initial court appearance before Judge Lono Lee at Honolulu District Court on Thursday. He is in custody at the Oahu Community Correctional Center in lieu of $500,000 bail.
The shooting occurred at about 9:20 a.m. Saturday in a parking lot next to a fast-food restaurant at 94-866 Moloalo St.
Police said the 34-year-old man arrived in the parking lot to meet and have a meal with a woman. Upon his arrival a man later identified as Hata exited a white sedan and confronted him, according to court documents.
The victim and Hata have a history that involves a woman they both dated.
Police said the two men argued, and Hata accused the victim of having sex with his girlfriend. Hata then pulled a semi-automatic pistol out of a bag he was carrying and allegedly shot the victim once in the abdomen.
Witnesses heard a loud bang and saw a white sedan flee the parking lot at a high rate of speed. Police said witnesses got the car’s Hawaii license plate number before it sped away.
Witnesses observed the victim on the ground. Soon after, they saw him enter a dark-colored sedan in the parking lot.
Police said the victim was taken in critical condition by a private vehicle to The Queen’s Medical Center-West Oahu. He was then transported by ambulance to Queen’s on Punchbowl Street.
Police said the victim identified Hata as the shooter.
On Monday night, officers of the Honolulu Police Department’s District 3 Crime Reduction Unit arrived in an area in Kunia after they received an anonymous tip of Hata’s whereabouts. As they scoured the grounds, one of the officers spotted Hata walking out of an area with tall California grass.
Hata ran back into the grassy area. Police said a brief foot chase ensued before he surrendered.
Hata has a criminal record of kidnapping, sex assault, promotion of a dangerous drug, criminal property damage, promotion of a detrimental drug, unauthorized entry into a dwelling and driving without a license.
