Historically, lava sledding (he‘e holua) was a traditional sport of Native Hawaiians. Now there is a controversy about professional athletes skiing and snowboarding down Puu Poliahu on Mauna Kea, directly on bare dirt and rocks (“No damage to Mauna Kea from skiing and snowboarding incident, University of Hawaii reports,” Star-Advertiser, March 12).
Who are these buzz-kills? Hawaiians consider the ocean sacred as well. Will the wet blankets be protesting modern surfing next?
Let’s protect the environment and let’s be respectful, but let’s have fun, too!
