Although I welcomed the Star-Advertiser shining a spotlight on the current debate over who should run the public preschools, I was somewhat disappointed that an opportunity for sharing the views on both sides of this question was not provided, as has been the case with debates over other topics (“DOE should run public preschools,” Star-Advertiser, Our View, March 10).
My limited understanding of this situation is that it is not as simple a question as would appear to be the case. There is legislative history around this question that might be worthwhile understanding, as well as strong views held by the supporters of early childhood learning regarding this question.
Then there is the possible legal question that might remain should House Bill 921 fail to pass, which might leave the question of jurisdiction in even more uncertainty than existed prior to the bill’s introduction.
Unfortunately, this question has now become so political that, in the end, the real losers will be the beneficiaries whose interests this was supposed to protect in the first place.
