A recent letter writer said that marijuana use cannot meet her extensive self-definition of recreation, and therefore should only be referred to as “non-medical marijuana” (“It’s non-medical, not recreational, marijuana,” Star-Advertiser, Letters, March 14).
An opinion is not necessarily a fact, and Webster’s Dictionary’s first definition of “recreation” is “an activity that diverts or amuses or stimulates.” A sample sentence is as follows: “Drug abuse is often regarded as a form of recreation.”
I am neither condoning nor condemning what other adults choose to do in their free time — it’s none of my business — but if it bothers the writer enough to make a public statement, she should at least do the research. The writer mentions “our” current concerns with pot, but I believe the majority of people do not share those concerns.
