State Sen. Donna Mercado Kim should have known better than to even suggest the loss of people’s established, honorable careers (“Proposed cuts could ‘devastate’ University of Hawaii, officials say,” Star-Advertiser, March 19).
Her style is a bit heavy-handed, especially regarding the University of Hawaii, whose relationship with the Legislature has always been stressful. She should know better.
Instead, she’s created a public-relations issue that might have been avoided if she regularly had coffee with one of UH’s influential people and discussed these potentially controversial and psychologically and financially costly situations.
This “old-school” method of keeping people in the loop may be just what our state and nation needs.
