I am in full agreement with legislation that state Sen. Mike Gabbard has been trying to pass (“Hawaii could become 1st state to ban plastics in restaurants under new legislative proposal,” Star-Advertiser, Top News, March 19).
Having begun banning some plastics in my own efforts, I agree that Hawaii can set an excellent example for other states to follow in banning plastics and styrofoam containers from restaurants.
Restaurant owners are exaggerating that they will have to close shop due to such a ban. There are many restaurants that provide takeout containers made of cardboard and paper as well as aluminum plates. These restaurants have not closed shop.
It’s also our own health at stake from consuming food and drinks from plastics, due to the high levels of BPA, which has been proven to damage our neurological and reproductive systems.
These bills that have failed before need to pass. Our oceans and the entire planet, as well as our own health, require us to immediate change in the way we wantonly pollute our land, air, sea and our bodies, with impunity.
