I would like to clarify some points in Shar Chun-Lum’s commentary (“Don’t make it hard to communicate about Ala Moana park,” Star-Advertiser, Island Voices, March 21).

It’s not true that only written comments are considered by the mayor as the decision maker. The Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) is one tool for decision making, and if people want their comments to be included in the EIS, they must submit them through the process. However, the public comments made at community meetings also are important tools, and these will be considered.

Ala Moana Beach is beloved, but not God-given. Marshland was drained to develop the park in the 1920s. The beach itself was created in 1954 from a former boat channel.

The most important part of the playground proposal was not mentioned, that it will be designed for all children, including those with disabilities. Not all children have the physical ability to enjoy the water or play on sand. Inclusivity: Isn’t that what the people’s park should be all about?
