Mahalo to Mindy Pennybaker for the front-page tribute to W.S. Merwin (“W.S. Merwin, prize-winning poet and ardent naturalist, dies in his Maui home,” Star-Advertiser, March 16).

Her sensitive portrayal revealed not only his genius as a poet but also detailed his formative years, decision to relocate to Hawaii, successful conservation work and influence on younger poets. Pennybacker went well beyond the obituaries in national publications. Kudos to the editor for selecting a locally born journalist to write the account.
