U.S. Sen. Brian Schatz’s sponsorship of a constitutional amendment to abolish the Electoral College is directly opposed to the interests of Hawaii.
The Electoral College protects the vote of citizens in less-populous states. Without that protection, a very few states would control every presidential election. Uncritically loyal party-line Democrats may like the idea now, but it could come back to bite them (and all of us in Hawaii) if the majority in the heavily populated states changes later.
There are good reasons our American democratic institutions have lasted over 200 years and are the envy of the world. Don’t tinker with them for partisan political reasons.
