Sue Cowing’s commentary on pedestrian safety covers everything I have encountered in being an 88-year-old pedestrian living the Makiki/Moiliili area (“Much more can, and must, be done for pedestrian safety,” Island Voicees, Star-Advertiser, May 2). Twice have I had near-misses from cars whizzing past stopped ones on King Street. Will the third be my last?
What can we do? Perhaps looking at Los Angeles’ crosswalks could be of help. They embed blinking amber lights in each lane that are activated by a pedestrian pushing a button on a pedestal. Southern California traffic aids have been adopted by Hawaii for decades with notable success. Why not look at this solution?
