The Mauna Kea Recreation Area on Saddle Road was renamed Wednesday in honor of the late state Sen. Gilbert Kahele during a private ceremony with Kahele’s family and government officials. New signs bearing the name Gilbert Kahele Recreation Area were unveiled during the ceremony. An official blessing is planned for a later date.
“My father worked just down the road from the recreation area for 34 years as director of the Public Works Division at Pohakuloa Training Area,” Kahele’s son, state Sen. Kai Kahele said. “When he was in the Legislature he was instrumental in achieving park improvements by way of the transfer of management to Hawaii County. He would be deeply honored that a place he dearly loved now bears his name.”
Gilbert Kahele served as a Democrat in the state Senate from 2011 until his death in 2016.
