As a faithful reader of the Star-Advertiser, I have waited to read about McKinley High School winning a 2019 College Success Award.
The Great Schools’ College Success Award honors public high schools in 25 states that are doing a great job of preparing students to get into and succeed in college. To quote the Great Schools.org description: “At President William McKinley High School in Honolulu, alumni and community members fund, mentor and inspire students’ aspirations. The McKinley Foundation doles out $80,000 in scholarship each year to seniors headed to college. A community mentorship program matches low-income seniors with successful professionals who guide students through their first year of college.”
Congratulations to the students, faculty and principal of McKinley High School for successfully creating a learning environment that helps students of all economic backgrounds succeed and for being recognized for their great work nationally.
Why hasn’t our public school system publicized such positive accolades? We need the positive publicity to show that public schools are doing a good job.
