Thank you for publishing “Isle’s vacation rentals bill holds irreversible consequences,” by Dan Bucks (Star-Advertiser, Island Voices, May 23).
While I’m not yet sufficiently versed in the legal issues surrounding vacation rentals to make such critical assessments, Bucks’ commentary raises questions that need to be explored carefully, before any such legislation becomes law.
If even half of what Bucks presented is true, it’s a terrible indictment of state Sen. Donovan Dela Cruz, the Senate and House leadership, and any legislators who voted for this bill. Are they lazy or inept politicians for not having investigated these things before passing the bill? Or have they sold off the best interests of the people of Hawaii for money from special interests that seek to enrich themselves at the cost of island residents?
Gov. David Ige should veto this bill. It seems there are serious questions that have not been sufficiently addressed.
