University of Hawaii coed sailing in 11th after Day 1 of championships

The University of Hawaii coed sailing team is in 11th place after Day 1 of the 2019 Inter-Collegiate Sailing Association Gill Coed National Championships on Tuesday in Newport, R.I.

A total of 36 schools were divided into two 18-team regattas. Eight races in each division took place in cold and windy conditions. With 149 total points, UH is within range of ninth-place Tufts University (124) and also is in search of its first finals appearance since 2005.

In the A Division, Michael Pacholski, Devon Stapleton and Samuel Patton recorded 84 points, while Patrick Wilkinson and Annika Garrett scored 65 points competing in the B Division.

Semifinal action concludes today, with the top nine teams in each group advancing to the finals that begin on Thursday.

UH assistant Jesse Andrews into ICSA Hall

University of Hawaii assistant sailing coach Jesse Andrews was voted into the Inter-Collegiate Sailing Association’s Hall of Fame on Monday night.

Receiving the Graham Hall Award for Outstanding Service by a college sailing professional, Andrews joins UH head sailing coach Andy Johnson in the Hall.

Following an All-America career as a Rainbow sailor, Andrews is now in his 22nd year with his alma mater. He helped UH to two national championships (2001 women, 2004 coed).

Andrews joined Ted Livingston (founder of the UH sailing program, inducted in 1982), Charlie Dole (former UH head coach, inducted in 1995) and Johnson (2012) as the fourth UH coach inducted into the Hall of Fame.

UH pole vaulter receives academic award

Hawaii women’s track and field student-athlete Nina Bean received second-team honors on the Google Cloud Academic All-District 8 list on Tuesday.

Bean is the 11th Rainbow Wahine to receive all-district honors for track and field/cross country and the first since 2013 (Samantha Balentine). A Kaimuki High School alumna, Bean completed her senior season while majoring in marine biology. The pole vaulter set a personal record at the Rainbow Relays by clearing the bar at 11 feet, 11.75 inches this year. Bean posted two top-five finishes in the 10 meets she competed in.
