I am glad that Amanda Eller was found and that the nightmare of her family and friends is over.
But I think Eller used poor judgment in not taking her cell phone. I understand how she would want to disconnect from the outside world and its distractions. But she still should have taken it with her and just turned it off. If she got lost or in a bad situation, she could have simply turned it on and called for help.
Also, a low-tech device like a whistle can be heard a lot farther and sustained longer than the human voice.
So many man hours and helicopter services, not to mention the mental anguish of her parents, could have been avoided if she had followed the motto of “Be Prepared” — something I learned as a 12-year-old Boy Scout.
