Regarding speeding traffic, I have observed that drivers don’t stop speeding at the exit ramp, and it is deadly.
While a pedestrian hit at 25 mph has a 90% chance of surviving, one hit at 45 mph has a 90% chance of dying. Higher mainland speeds are no excuse — they kill more than 40,000 per year in auto crashes.
Oahu, with our shorter commutes and crowded roads, should have lower speed limits. In my commute, on the Likelike and H-1, I regularly see drivers going 60 in 45 mph zones, yet the time saved by doing so amounts to a grand total of two minutes. That manini savings is not worth the risk to my life or anyone else’s.
We have a pernicious speeding culture that we must change to reduce the carnage. So, please slow down, and bring the aloha back into our driving, so we all get home alive.
