In the past two years, I have flown more than 140,000 miles, including travel to and from Daniel K. Inouye International Airport and John F. Kennedy International Airport.
I have found these airports an embarrassment to residents, disrespectful to the memory of two Democratic statesmen, comparable to aviation facilities in many Third World countries, and indicative of decades of multi-level government mismanagement.
Since the mid-1960s, travelers at the Honolulu airport have been subjected to the inconvenience of endless construction, lei stands that have lost the luster of aloha, underutilized facilities and parking lots loaded with airport employee vehicles.
Each election cycle we have the opportunity to purge elected officials who are more interested in responding to special interests instead of their entire constituency. I hope things will change.
