Waialua has been without its public swimming pool for three years.
Mayor Kirk Caldwell’s city Parks and Recreation Department has provided many excuses for the pool’s closure. The reality is that a brand new pool could have been built in Waialua in the last three years, which could have been financed in part with the savings from not paying for life lifeguards, etc., during that time.
Many young children who need to learn to swim and others have been deprived of this important public resource.
The City and County’s failure to maintain the Waialua pool demonstrates irresponsibly and its lack of capacity to develop and maintain new parks, e.g., Sherwood Forest. This poor management also shows why people get frustrated with government and politicians, which leads to apathy and a lack of civic engagement.
