Lee Cataluna summed up illegal vacation rentals in her column, “An illegal rental by any other name is still illegal,” quite appropriately. Yes, city authorities sitting and counting until 4:30 p.m. won’t solve the problem, but immediate action can; sounds familiar regarding the illegal aerial fireworks and bombs neighbors set off more than twice a year and souped-up mopeds that scream down quiet neighborhood streets.
These violators apparently “feel absolutely entitled to ignore the law” due to the city’s “passivity” when complaints are called in. Why waste city funds on these law violators or housing the homeless or citing sidewalk violators when there’s way more to gain financially from lucrative vacation rental owners who had the foresight to make a living and who, in turn, employ people who are trying to pay their bills, too, in a high cost-of-living state?
Fine, lien, foreclose. Nice.
