Sometimes the less we say, the better. I was somewhat dismayed that Capt. Ben Moszkowicz, of the Honolulu Police Department Traffic Division, looked so lightly at crosswalk scofflaws crossing the street after the no-walk signal appeared (“Crosswalk law cracks down on late starters,” Star- Advertiser, July 1).
He said under the new law, “we probably wouldn’t cite people” unless they were in the crosswalk when the red hand came on. This means they entered the crosswalk after the countdown.
He says this is “common sense” — or is it a cavalier attitude in direct violation of the law HPD is sworn to uphold? This action will only further infuriate drivers trying to proceed through the intersection.
I hope this attitude trickles down to those who drive over the speed limit. Why cite us unless we go 10 or 15 mph over the posted speed limit? So come on, HPD officers. Give us drivers a mulligan. It’s OK with your boss.
