The USA women’s soccer team turned in impressive victories during the 2019 World Cup. Nobody can say it wasn’t deserving for a group of athletes who demonstrated they are clearly at the top of their game.
However, I believe they need some re-education in humility and good sportsmanship. Excessive celebration is tantamount to kicking an opponent when they are down and laughing in their faces. I’ve never been a fan of celebratory antics in either male of female sports, especially when you are representing your nation and you have that U.S. flag on your uniform.
Team USA are goodwill ambassadors, not a caricature of the “Ugly American,” a perception of the U.S. that many in this world hold. Celebrate achievement, of course, but be mindful you are not just representing yourself, but you are representing your country and its citizens.
Do it with class, not bravado.
