The leaders stayed at the top after the second day of the 60th annual Hawaiian International Billfish Tournament on Tuesday off the Kona Coast.
The father and son team of Martin Firestein (Captain) and Mitchel of Laguna Niguel Billfish Club remained in first place with their 1,200 points. Moving into second place was Lizard Island Game Fish Club (900 points). Tied for third with 700 points is Houston Big Game Fishing Club-Team Filo Pamela Basco and Kona Gamefish Club-Blue Fin. With 650 points, Mermaid Anglers Club is in fifth place.
The event continues today and runs through Friday.
Mamiya advances at U.S. Open of Surfing
Despite dislocating his shoulder last Friday, Hawaii’s Barron Mamiya advanced out of his Round 3 heat at the Vans U.S. Open of Surfing on Tuesday in Huntington Beach, Calif.
Mamiya recorded a two-wave total of 12.00 to beat Morgan Cibilic (Australia, 11.83), Matt Wilkinson (Australia, 10.77) and Deivid Silva (Brazil, 10.46).
Of the 32 surfers who remain in the competition, only two represent Hawaii (Seth Moniz and Mamiya).
Failing to advance out of his heat was Ezekiel Lau (4.00).
On the women’s side, Hawaii’s Summer Macedo is into Round 3 after placing second in her Round 2 heat, scoring an 11.23.
Malia Manuel and Alessa Quizon have yet to surf in their Round 2 heats.
Eliminated in Round 2 were Zoe McDougall (11.73), Alana Blanchard (8.93), Gabriela Bryan (5.77) and Bethany Hamilton (4.60). Keala Tomoda-Bannert (7.74) and Bailey Nagy (7.67) failed to make it out of Round 1.
Surf permitting, the next call for the event is today at 4 a.m.
