One of the Thirty Meter Telescope opponents’ claims is that Mauna Kea will be drilled into to provide water for the new observatory. This is misinformation.
The water table beneath Mauna Kea is thousands of feet below the observatories. There is no underground water available to do what they claim. Though groundwater is the primary source of drinking water in Hawaii, there are no wells extracting groundwater near the summit of Mauna Kea. The nearest wells are approximately 12 miles away in Waikii Ranch.
I would like to see TMT opponents turn their fervor toward protecting our oceans and to stop Kakaako from turning into a Manhattan skyline.
