In the film, “Chasing Coral,” we were educated about human desecration of the coral reefs and subsequent killing of marine life found there. Many areas in the world were cited, including magnificent Kaneohe Bay, where the coral is bleaching and dying.
If the state Department of Health approves a permit to allow the Kaneohe Yacht Club to restart a program of renovating boats (sanding, stripping, painting) at its location, this will just add to the destruction of the bay.
This kind of work needs to be done at a boatyard where runoff is controlled and air quality monitored. The yacht club is not such a facility.
Please send your objections to this permit by today to cleanwaterbranch@doh.hawaii.gov.
Remember, as the film states, “When the ocean stops breathing, so do we.”
