Re your story, “Hawaii public schools shift gears on AC, expedite use of window units” (Star-Advertiser, Aug. 23): Only half of the 11,000 classrooms have air conditioning, and many are “already on the fritz.”
I teach for the state Department of Education, and was so miserable from classroom heat this week that I stayed home from school. Apparently there is no deadline for this “expedited” use of window air conditioners, nor is there mention of which administrator decides the dates of installation.
I have two solutions that will definitely expedite a solution: Require any administrator failing to install air conditioning immediately to work daily without his or her own air conditioning, until problem is resolved. And change the back-to-school date to September for cooler weather.
