There is no Planet B!
Several readers and “experts” have suggested that the original Hawaiians would be in favor of the Thirty Meter Telescope. Really? While the early Hawaiians definitely used the stars to navigate, I seriously doubt they ever fantasized about living on them, or knowing their composition. They were too concerned about protecting this world. They would probably have considered yet another telescope on Mauna Kea both a waste and a desecration — as do their descendants.
The Hawaii state motto is “Ua mau ke ea o ka aina i ka pono” (“The life of the land is perpetuated in righteousness”) — except where it’s perpetuated in dollars.
Spend all that money to clean up this planet, beginning with the “floating continent of garbage” on our doorstep.
