The City and County of Honolulu has a valuable resource in the Ocean Safety lifeguard team. They risk their lives every day to ensure the safety of the general public.
You only have to read and view the many reports of lifesaving efforts by lifeguards to appreciate their importance.
The effort to expand lifeguard coverage from eight hours to 10 hours should be encouraged in order to provide the additional needed coverage needed to ensure the public’s safety.
In addition, serious consideration should be given to hiring more lifeguards to provide the coverage these expanded hours require. Recent events, such as the dramatic rescue of a married couple off the Lanai Lookout, have proven the value of a professional lifesaving corps.
Added benefits and pay to go along with these added responsibilities would ensure the recruitment and retention of this elite group of watermen.
