First of all, no one is trying to repress science by being against building the Thirty Meter Telescope on Mauna Kea, as a letter writer claims (“Freedom of science can’t be repressed,” Star-Advertiser, Oct. 9). Second, not one Hawaiian student is going to be deprived if the TMT is built in the Canary Islands. There are 13 telescopes on Mauna Kea currently. Enough, already!
Currently, the world is seeing the annihilation of indigenous rights. It is what the fires in Brazil are about: Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro wants to grow crops on native lands. In Australia, the birthing trees of the aborigines are going to be paved over. In New Zealand, Maori rights are being trampled for development.
Let TMT go to the Canary Islands. Hawaii is prized for beauty and that beauty brings billions of dollars here. Let the ku kia‘i have a victory. I stand against TMT.
