Soft-soled rubber shoes are the requested attire as the county hosts a blessing and grand opening for the new South Maui Community Park Gymnasium at 9 a.m. Monday.
At 31,858 square feet, the $21.4 million gymnasium,
at 1501 Liloa Drive in Kihei, offers the largest indoor playing court space in
Maui County, according to Department of Parks and Recreation Director Karla Peters. There are two full-size basketball/volleyball courts with divider
curtains.
Other features of the air-conditioned sports facility include bleacher seating for more than 1,000, restrooms, showers, a wireless sound and public address system, parks staff offices, public meeting rooms, a concession area, 170 parking stalls, space for food trucks, a recycled-water irrigation system and a roof-mounted, 100-kilowatt photovoltaic system, according to the county.
Nishikawa Architects Inc. designed the gym, and Blazy Construction Inc. built it.
