Kona man, 35, critical after being run over while lying in roadway

Hawaii County police say a 35-year-old man is in the hospital with life-threatening injuries after he was run over by a car early Sunday morning on Alii Drive near the Kailua-Kona pier.

Police said the man was lying in the middle of the northbound lane when he was run over by a 49-year-old man operating a silver 2023 Toyota Corolla sedan. The incident happened at about 3:30 a.m. Sunday. The driver stopped to render aid and called authorities.

The patient was taken to Kona Community Hospital with severe head and internal injuries, and later transferred to the Queen’s Medical Center in Honolulu for further treatment. He is currently listed in critical condition.

An investigation is underway, but police said the patient may have been under the influence of an intoxicant. At this time, no charges are expected to be filed against the driver.

Both patient and driver are from Kailua-Kona.

Witnesses should contact Officer Ansel Robinson at 808-326-4646 ext. 229 or ansel.robinson@hawaiicounty.gov. Anonymous tips can be reported to Crime Stoppers at 808-961-8300.
