Boy, 14, arrested after carjacking of kupuna in Waianae

A 14-year-old boy was arrested this morning after police said he threatened a 76-year-old woman with a machete, stole her vehicle in Waianae and later crashed into two parked vehicles near Kapiolani Medical Center.

According to the Honolulu Police Department, the carjacking took place at about 12:20 a.m. near Guard Street and Farrington Highway.

Police said the woman had left her vehicle running while feeding stray cats when the teen approached her armed with a machete, threatened her and demanded the vehicle.

The suspect then drove away in the stolen vehicle, police said.

An alert was broadcast, and officers with Districts 5 and 7 Crime Reduction Units later located the vehicle near Kapiolani Medical Center.

Police said the suspect crashed into two parked vehicles before he was taken into custody.

The juvenile was arrested on suspicion of first-degree robbery and first-degree unauthorized control of a propelled vehicle.

The investigation remains ongoing.
