The Hawaii Department of Health is moving its Vital Records Office to downtown Honolulu.

Vital Records — part of the Office of Health Status Monitoring — issues birth, death and marriage certificates.

Health officials said the move to Suite 100 at the City Financial Tower, 201 Merchant St., will begin Sept. 21 and is expected to be complete by Oct. 1.

During the transition, both the current Kinau Hale office at 1250 Punchbowl St. and the new location will remain open to prevent service disruptions. Once the move is complete, DOH said all in-person services will shift exclusively to the new downtown site.

The Office of Health Status Monitoring issues about 300,000 certified copies of birth, death and marriage records each year. It also maintains Hawaii’s official vital records dating back to the mid-1800s.

Since the move involves transporting and organizing more than 175 years of records, DOH said customers may experience delays in mail orders, genealogy requests and historical record searches during the transition.

“This move represents an important investment in customer service while preserving Hawaii’s historical vital records,” said Grace Vo, State registrar, in a news release. “The new office provides a modern space near public transportation and public parking that will better serve Hawaiʻi residents. Additionally, with the relocation, we will be extending our office hours.”

DOH is also modernizing its vital records database and ordering system to improve efficiency.

Some other changes:

>> The downtown office’s new public hours will be longer, from 7:45 a.m. to 4 p.m., Monday through Friday, excluding state holidays. The office currently closes at 2:30 p.m.

>> Certificate paper is changing from green to yellow with improved resistance to thermal fading and security features. Previously issued, green certificates remain fully valid.

>> The state registrar’s signature will be on the front page to improve document scanning and verification.

Starting Oct. 1, customers send mail to:
